City of Kulmbach and the

Administrative District

About 79,000 people live and work in the administrative district of the City of Kulmbach – almost 30,000 of them in the district City of Kulmbach. Altogether, 22 cities, markets and townships –thereof five administrative collectivities are marking a vital role on local community events of the district, that extends to an area of 656.53 km².

The economic structure of the administrative district of the City of Kulmbach is well balanced. The variety of trades characterizes our region. Modern industries, important companies and strong and solid craft trade companies distinguish the working environment.

The name Kulmbach conjures automatically the image of beer. Kulmbach ranks among the most important brewery towns in Germany and is production site for internationally renowned beer. About 2 million hectoliters of beer is brewed in Kulmbach each year.

Well established and modern trades mark the administrative district of the City of Kulmbach, such as, food and semi luxury food trades, bakery supplies, as well as textile and clothing industry.

Plassenburg castle in Kulmbach is one of the architectural treasures within the ranks of Germany’s castles. On the outside a well-fortified stronghold but on the inside, the beautiful, richly decorated courtyard “der Schöne Hof” seduces the visitor to feel the courtly life. First mentioned in 1135, the Plassenburg was almost fully destroyed in the course of the decades before Margrave Georg Friedrich decided to re-build the castle almost entirely in its present form.

A number of museums, e.g., the Museum of Pewter Figures and different events find the perfect setting today in the Plassenburg and inspire a huge audience each year.
