AGO AG Energie + Anlagen: Major order in Greece
AGO AG Energie + Anlagen was awarded a major contract in Greece by Thermie Serres (contractor) for the installation of four combined heat and power plants (CHP) with a total performance of 16,000 kWelectrical. The total contract volume is scarcely eleven million Euros.
In order to convert the power supply and heating water supply of the 100,000 inhabitant city Serres as soon as possible, a very tight time schedule must be observed. The start of construction is planned for April 2007. Handover to the client will take place in November 2007. The interior finishes of the heating station are to be carried out in 2 phases. Step one, which has now been ordered, comprises the delivery and installation of four CHPs. Step 2 is to be carried out in 2008 / 2009 and comprises the installation of four extra CHPs.
The contractor “Thermie Serres” is situated in Athens and is one of the largest new private energy suppliers of Greece. Greece does not yet have a gas supply density comparable to Germany. The extension of the gas supply and liberalization allows private investors to act as energy supplier like in Germany.
After visiting the Energy Center EVC II for the chip factory AMD in Dresden which was constructed by AGO AG from Kulmbach, Thermie Serres decided to implement the project with AGO AG. Two years ago, the Energy Center in Dresden was furnished with the same CHPs within an extremely short construction time.
As subcontractor for the switchgears and the control systems, Hermos from Mistelgau has been assigned by AGO AG. Thus, two local companies benefit from the investment in Greece. For the construction on site a Greek company will be involved. That way, also the Greek economy and especially the industrially weak region is strengthened. The CHP which will be situated in an earthquake zone will supply the city of Serres (80 km north of Thessaloniki) with power by means of four CHPs. This special circumstance represents a challenge to the quality of the design. Each module has an electrical power of approximately 4,000 kW. That equals a power of approximately 5,600 PS per engine. The engines which are produced by Deutz in Mannheim are the largest engines produced in Germany. Each module weighs about 50 tons and has dimensions as big as a railway car. This is a logistic challenge. The four CHPs will be transported from Mannheim to Italy on special flat bed trucks and from there will be shipped to Thessaloniki. Just the transport of the CHPs causes costs of six-digit amounts.
Matthias Hain, project manager at AGO AG Energie + Anlagen emphasizes: “It’s good to know that our know-how is already known and appreciated in Greece. We’re not afraid of new challenges and even less of frontiers and language barriers”.
For the execution of the project, AGO AG had to set up an operating site in Serres. That was necessary to be allowed to execute construction works according to Greek law. If the volume exceeds a certain amount, this step is inevitable
